If your child is non-speaking, minimally speaking, or has difficulty being understood, they may qualify for an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device through insurance.
Here’s the simple process:
Tell the SLP:
“I would like to see if my child qualifies for an AAC device through insurance.”
The SLP will complete an AAC evaluation to determine what type of communication device your child needs.
Your child may try different AAC devices and communication apps.
The SLP will see which device works best for your child and document how your child uses it.
Your child’s doctor will need to provide a prescription for a speech-generating device and document the medical need.
Once the evaluation and prescription are completed, the AAC company usually works with your SLP and insurance company to submit the paperwork for approval.
If approved, the device is provided to your child.
Start with your child’s speech therapist.
If your child does not currently have an SLP, contact your insurance company and ask:
“Does my plan cover AAC evaluations and speech-generating devices?”
You can also ask your child’s pediatrician for help getting connected with an SLP who has experience with AAC
You do not need to know which AAC device your child needs before starting. That is what the AAC evaluation is for.
And an AAC device does not prevent a child from learning to speak. AAC gives your child another way to communicate while supporting their overall communication development.
Every child is different, and insurance requirements can vary. Always check with your specific insurance plan.
